Lenovo targets leadership in smartphones

Lenovo, China’s biggest personal computer maker, plans to expand into the smartphone market with high-end models in pipeline in 2019.

“Most Chinese people know Lenovo as a leading computer brand now. They will soon find it also offers a reliable smartphone brand,” said Chang Cheng, president of Lenovo’s smartphone business.

Lenovo is rapidly expanding thanks to a price-aggressive strategy, the company said yesterday.

Lenovo’s smartphone sales jumped 50 percent annually between August and October, compared with an average of about 10 percent growth in China’s overall smartphone market.

The high growth mainly came from price-aggressive models such as the Z5 Pro and the more affordable model of Z5s released yesterday in Beijing.

The phones, which feature triple-camera technology, Qualcomm’s AI-optimized processor with optimized AI functions, cost between 1,000 yuan (US$145) and 2,000 yuan.

Comparatively, other brands with triple-camera and AI features from Huawei, Oppo and Samsung, cost at least 3,000 yuan.
