Austrian empress’ wardrobe exhibited

AN exhibition featuring the wardrobe of Empress Elisabeth opened in Vienna on Thursday, marking the 160th anniversary of her marriage to Franz Joseph.

Elisabeth was called Sisi by her family and friends, as she was known by that name as a youngster. She became the empress of Austria and queen of Hungary. Born into Bavarian loyalty, Sisi enjoyed an informal upbringing, before marrying Franz at 16. She was suddenly absorbed into Hapsburg Court life, which she found stifling. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in 1867.
