Bard’s 450th birthday in ‘sulphurous flames’
WILLIAM Shakespeare’s hometown, Stratford-upon-Avon, on Wednesday celebrated his 450th birthday with a massive fireworks display, while a major theater in London launched his famous play “Hamlet” on a two-year global journey to mark the anniversary.
This weekend’s festivities start with a 1,000-strong procession through the town, finishing with the laying of flowers on Shakespeare’s grave at Holy Trinity Church.
The global tour of “Hamlet” aims to visit 205 countries and regions across the world in two years. A total of 16 crew will be on the road, with 12 actors and four support staff.
Among the venues is the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing.
