Buddy Bears bare it all on famous beach
AN installations of 145 bear statues in various colors and patterns recently appeared in Rio de Janeiro. Lining the promenade at Copacabana Beach in Brazil’s second largest city, the United Buddy Bear sculptures have been created to promote peace, friendship and cooperation between nations.
With each piece some 2 meters high, the bear sculptures are decorated by artists from 145 countries. Each artist has been tasked with representing the culture of their homeland. The project started in 2002 on Pariser Platz in Berlin. Since then the bears have been on a world tour that has taken them to four continents.
A fundraising charity fair will also be held during the exhibition in Rio de Janeiro with the proceeds going to help children in poverty stricken areas around the world.
The United Buddy Bears project had collected 2 million euros (US$2.74 million) as of December 2013.
