China’s ‘Dickinson’ releases debut book
YU Xiuhua’s debut poetry collection “The Moonlight On My Left Hand” is to be released by Guangxi Normal University Press next week. Praised by critics as China’s Emily Dickinson, Yu attained fame overnight when Poetry magazine posted her poem “Cross Half Of China To Sleep With You” on WeChat.
Yu, 39, is a farmer from Hubei Province. She has cerebral palsy and lives a simple life with her parents by raising rabbits. Yu says she started writing poetry some 16 years ago and says “poetry takes the least words to express myself due to my handicap.” So far she has produced more than 2,000 poems, most of which are about love and life.
Many media outlets have talked about her and her works in the past week. They say her poems carry real feelings and the power to move hearts.
Literature professor and poet Zang Di says Yu uses language as her body. The sincerity in her writing has drawn readers to her poetry.
