Chinese artists paint and ‘reshape’ Arctic landscapes

AN exhibition in Beijing is displaying the works of eight Chinese artists who traveled to the Arctic in 2014 to paint its landscapes.

Pieces by Cai Guangbin, Huang Zhiyang, Wei Qingji, and Zhu Yamei are featured at Today Art Museum in the capital city through October 7.

“Polar Light, Ink Ocean: The Exhibition of Chinese Ink Painting and Artists to the Antarctic Reshaping the Landscape” is curated by Lu Hong, one of the country’s top art critics. Lu says the landscapes they painted are neither Western-style landscapes, nor traditional Chinese landscape paintings.

“They didn’t trudge to the Arctic for sketches,” Lu said. “Their works didn’t repeat the traditional production or a direct reflection of the Arctic stretching in front of them. Their creations are based on humanity and nature, or protecting the environment.”

Some of the artists also used collages and juxtaposition in their ink-wash paintings to “reshape the landscapes.” It’s an affect which Lu says some viewers may find difficult to comprehend.

“But the reshaping of the landscapes reveals the artist’s pursuit of the possibilities in ink-wash paintings,” he added.
