India - Parents get life penalty
A court sentenced two married dentists to life in prison on Tuesday for killing their 14-year-old daughter and their housekeeper in a case that has polarized Indians.
Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, from the New Delhi suburb of Noida, reportedly broke down in tears when they were convicted on Monday and vowed to appeal. Defense lawyer Rebecca John said that the case, based largely on circumstantial evidence, was a “witch hunt.”
The couple’s daughter, Aarushi, was found dead in her bed in May 2008 with her throat slit with surgical precision. Their Nepali housekeeper’s lifeless body was found a day later on a terrace above Aarushi’s room.
