Japan – Nikkei up 2.8 percent

JAPAN'S Nikkei 225 stock index soared 2.8 percent to 10,690.79 on its first trading day of the new year Friday, as investors reacted to a weakening yen and Washington's temporary skirting of the "fiscal cliff."

The weakening yen is a big help to Japanese companies that sell abroad.
