Opening up the beauty of pastels

LIZ Haywood-Sullivan, chairwoman of the International Association of Pastel Societies, is standing in front of a pastel work in progress in a room in Suzhou Technology University.
She’s thinking how to blend her ideas on a collaborative piece being worked on by Tony Allain, a pastel artist from the United Kingdom, while Tony adds pink to the contributions of four other artists.
They are doing the “Paint Around” pastel performance during the International Pastel Forum, one of a series events of the 2nd Biennial China (Suzhou) International Pastel Art Exhibition that runs until November 20.
During the show, five pastel artists from around the world take turns to jointly paint and finish five different pastel works, giving the audience a live show of the beauty of this art.
The forum gathers key figures of the pastel world from home and abroad, and shares with the audience basic information about the IAPS, as well as the international trend of this art and its unique techniques.
The Biennial artists also include China’s Hang Mingshi, Ding Wei and Gal Yan, Desmond O’Hagan, Alain Picard and Stan Sperlak from the US, and Isabelle V. Lim from Singapore, as well as Anne Hevener, editor-in-chief of Pastel Journal.
At this second Biennial exhibition, 60 celebrated artists from 14 countries across five continents, and 40 renowned Chinese artists are showcasing their best original pastel artworks. The collection of 100 pastel works are being shown at the Ming Gallery of Art, one of the organizers of the biennial.
The exhibition is very diverse not only in its subjects but also in the individuals’ distinctive creativity, styles, skills and techniques.
During the Biennial, visitors can appreciate pastel masters’ artwork closely and also participate in master classes and salons which give them the opportunity to exchange ideas with artists face-to-face, and get a deep insight into the world of pastel art.
“No other pastel exhibition has been able to gather so many artists and artworks. It is a pastel ‘universe’,” said Lim, who is also a consultant with the IAPS.
“We have been looking forward to this event to bring us a wide diversity of beauty, creativity and style,” said co-founder of the exhibition and renowned artist Hang Shiming.
