Queensland - Ethereal Cai falls back to Earth
Ninety-nine life-sized grey wolves, some tumbling and swirling in the air, rush toward a glass wall. One by one they proceed, without hesitation, in an endless loop. Titled “Head On,” the iconic art installation by renowned Chinese artist Cai Guoqiang, appears among pieces of artwork during his debut personal exhibition in Queensland, Australia.
Making a name globally with the fireworks display during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Fujian native is famed for his talent and creativity with large-scale nighttime sparklers. Yet he’s forging ahead into a brand new area.
“Though the aesthetic ideas in my works remain the same, my focus this time ‘falls back to Earth’ from a faraway universe and galaxy,” said Cai. “I’m still interested in those invisible, spiritual things, and my works are still surreal and poetic. Now I want to know more about the Earth, the environment in which we exist and the material world.”
The exhibition “Cai Guoqiang: Falling back to Earth” is on display at Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art through May 11.
