Royal U-boat from World War II opens with old-timers’ tales

GO aboard Britain’s only World War II-era operating U-boat with a submariner to hear his stories about living beneath the waves.

The British Royal Navy’s HMS Alliance opened to the public on April 3 at The Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport following a 7 million British pound (US$11.7 million) conservation and restoration project.

Launched in 1947, HMS Alliance was one of 14 A-class submarines built for service in East Asia.

Visitors can learn what it was like to serve on a submarine.

There are authentic fixtures, lighting, noises, even smells, as well as crew uniforms.

Visitors can see every decade of the submarine’s service from the 1940s to the 1970s.

They can peer through working periscopes to view Portsmouth Harbor and meet veteran submariners telling personal stories.

Facilities are available for visitors with disabilities, including a platform lift for wheelchairs and audio guides in foreign languages.

The submarine was designed in 1945 near the end of the war, but she is typical of submarines that served throughout World War II.

Alliance herself served through the Cold War.

All tours must be booked at the Alliance Centre.
