Shanghai - Commedia dell-arte classic

"THE King Stag" (1762), a classic of commedia dell-arte, is being staged in Chinese by the Shanghai Theater Academy this week.

Featuring masks, elaborate costumes and fantastic, magical elements, it tells the story of Keng Deramo's quest for love in a world of treachery.

In the play Keng Deramo is transformed into a stag by the father of a woman he has rejected as a bride.

More than 10 Chinese actors, mostly from the academy, plus a Peking Opera performer, are staging the show.

The one-and-a-half-hour play - performed without subtitles - incorporates elements of circus, street theater, singing and dancing and is directed by Russia-born, US-based director Dmitry Troyanovsky.

Using comedy and fairytale, it addresses the question "What do we fall in love with - body or soul?" says Troyanovsky. "With a happy ending, it presents suffering."

Venetian playwright Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806) was a master of commedia dell-arte, emphasizing masked stock types and improvisation.

Troyanovsky came to Shanghai three years ago to teach a Stanislavsky master class and started to give workshops at the Shanghai Theater Academy.
