Shanghai - French connections
SHANGHAI International Film Festival featured the "French Panorama," which this year showcased more than 20 French films - in genres including romantic comedy, drama and historic narrative - all screened in their original French versions.
The festival offered a great opportunity to enjoy recent French success on the big screen, including multiple award-winning "Amour." It took the 2013 Oscar for best foreign film, the Palme D'or at the Cannes Festival in 2012, as well as the Cesar for best movie, best director, best actor, best actress and best script.
Meanwhile, fans of hugely popular French actresses Audrey Tautou and Juliette Binoche were treated to screenings of Tautou's "Thérèse Desqueyroux" and Binoche in "An Open Heart."
A group of French directors were invited to the festival to share their philosophies and give presentations, with director, critic and writer Leos Carax one of the highlights.
Carax is noted for his poetic style and his tortured depictions of love, and his "Les Amants du Pont-Neuf," or "The Lovers on the Bridge," a favorite with many French cinema buffs.
This year the leading figure of French New Wave brought his new feature film "Holy Motors" in Shanghai and met with the audience afterwards.
