United States - Counting cost of Sandy

SUPERSTORM Sandy has come and gone this week, but the numbers are still coming in from its march of destruction across the East Coast.

Early estimates indicate that the storm caused between US$10 billion and possibly US$50 billion in overall damages. The US$50 billion figure would make Sandy the second-costliest storm in US history, behind Hurricane Katrina, according to weather.com. Katrina caused damage of more than $100 billion.

On Friday, the death toll from Sandy in the US rose to 109, and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg warned: "There could be more fatalities."
