The great pot experiment is underway in America.
Marijuana users celebrated as Colorado became the first state to allow retail cannabis sales, putting it in the vanguard of efforts nationwide to legalize the drug.
Recreational pot sales on the first day, Wednesday, totaled around US$1 million, retailers said.
Colorado had 24 shops open on Wednesday, and aside from long lines and sporadic reports of shoppers cited for smoking pot in public, there were few problems.
The state issued 348 licenses for sale of up to 28 grams to adults. Washington state will follow in several months.
