United States - Heard the one about the president and his challenger?

US President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney took a break from an increasingly acrimonious presidential campaign and poked fun at themselves and each other for charity on Thursday.

The pause for jokes in the tight race for the November 6 election took place at the Alfred E Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, held by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York to help needy children.

Romney playfully jabbed at the president, saying both candidates have crucial people on whom they rely.

As Romney put it, "I've my beautiful wife, Ann, he's got Bill Clinton."

The lighthearted evening was sandwiched between Tuesday's debate and the final one tomorrow night in South Florida.

"I learned there are worse things that can happen to you on your anniversary than forgetting to buy a gift," Obama joked, referring to his poor performance the first debate two weeks earlier.

The president also chided Romney for his wealth. "Earlier today I went shopping at some stores in Midtown," Obama said.

"I understand Governor Romney went shopping for some stores in Midtown."
