Vintage take on Burgundy culture

CHANTAL Chi is a renowned Taiwan wine writer who has built up a large following in China’s mainland with her books, columns, lectures and occasional stint as a judge in wine tasting events.

Her latest book, “Bourgogne Grands Crus,” tells of Chi’s visits to prestigious chateaus in Burgundy, France, sampling nearly 500 vintages worth about 1 million yuan (US$160,000).

At the recent launch in Shanghai, Chi choked back tears as she recounted her struggle for perfection as she tried to meet her publisher’s deadline.

The 276-page book, in Chinese and packed with anecdotes, notes, photos and maps, is a guide for readers to select Burgundy wines and plan a trip there. The author lived in Shanghai for eight years and now resides in Thailand. She received the title of Chevalier of National Merit from the French government in 2012 for her work promoting French wine culture.
