A rundown of some great Shanghai jogging routes

Joggers have a wealth of options in Shanghai. Routes can include narrow lanes with shikumen (stone-gate house) buildings on either side, stadiums, public schools and university campuses. The Bund makes for a wonderful route teeming with history, Binjiang Avenue in the Pudong New Area offers great views of the Huangpu River and the Bund, while a jog around Century Park brings runners closer to nature.

Bund

Length: 1,500 meters

The jogging trail starts from the intersection of Yan’an Road E. and the Bund. Joggers will be able to hear the regular bell chimes of the Customs House clock and feel a breeze off the Huangpu River. A jog at night has a dreamy effect as the landscape lights give the buildings a majestic look.

The route covers the famous Bund addresses from No. 1 to 33. Stretch those legs in the shadow of the Asia Buiding at No. 1 before heading north toward Suzhou Creek and Garden Bridge.

Along the way, soak up the city’s history while gazing at the Pudong Development Bank building, Customs House, along with the Bank of Communications and Bank of China edifices. On the corner of Nanjing Road, the Fairmont Peace Hotel still stands elegantly all these decades after being built. Soon after comes building No. 33, the site of the former British Consulate, and Suzhou Creek.

Binjiang Avenue

Length: 2,500 meters

This route starts from Taidong Road Ferry Station at the north end of the pedestrian-only Binjiang Avenue and ends at Dongchang Road.

The Taidong station connects with Gongping Road Ferry Station on the Puxi side of the river. Dozens of bus routes connect to Gongping station.

Great views of the Huangpu River and the Bund are the highlight of this route along the promenade. Joggers will also pass numerous water fountains, which may be too tempting to pass up as a way to cool down. Listen closely for the chirps of egrets and the echoing of chiming bells from the Customs House clock in the distance.

Century Park

Length: 5,000 meters

Starting from Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Station on Metro Line 2, joggers can take a warm-up walk toward Century Park.

Going clockwise, the park is surrounded by Jinxiu Road, Fangdian Road and Huamu Road. Together they form a ring outside the park’s wall. Nice scenery with plenty of trees and man-made waterways make a jog in Century Park a good way to de-stress after a long day at work.
