THE 9th China International Cartoon and Animation Festival - China's biggest gathering for cartoon and animation fans and industry insiders - starts tomorrow in Hangzhou.

This year, in addition to perennial favorites such as cosplay shows, competitions and the Golden Monkey King Awards, the CICAF also includes new novel programs - including the first cartoon and animation creative fruit festival and a cartoon and animation graffiti competition.

Unlike opening ceremonies at the previous eight festivals, which were characterized by movie stars and glitz, this year the curtain up embraces the government drive toward greater frugality.

Replacing the superstars is a multimedia symphony concert in People's Great Hall of Zhejiang Province. Theme songs of cartoon classics will be presented by the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, together with modern light and video technology.

During the six-day CICAF, the cartoon and animation fair "Mambo Dance for Marvel Life" will be held at the Grand Canal Tiandi.

As the platform for showcasing and promoting folk cartoon creativity, this fair gathers grassroots designers, illustrators and animators, among an array of hipsters.

The gala parade is an indispensable feature of the festival. On Sunday, a 500-meter-long parade, comprised of 10 floats and 460 performers, will pass along Zhongshan Road.

And if you cannot make the parade, go to the main venue in Baima Lake, Binjiang District, to view the floats and models between April 29 and May 1.

To date, more than 400 noted animation studios and enterprises from 68 countries and regions will take part in the festival - including attendees from the United States, Britain, Italy, Japan, France, South Korea and Switzerland.

The Czech Republic will be represented for the first time, with puppet work lauded as among the best in Europe.

The CICAF has also attracted talented animation and cartoon professionals from closer to home.

Cartoon fans will have chance to meet popular celebrities at autograph sessions. Hong Kong cartoonist Wong Yuk-long, Taiwanese cartoonist Cai Zhizhong, Xia Da, as renowned for her girl-like appearance as her delicate cartoons, and young male manga artist 19van are among those set to attend.

As the highlight of the CICAF, this year the Golden Monkey King Awards will select winners among 700 entries from home and abroad.

Visual effects wizard Richard Taylor, renowned for his work on "Avatar" and "The Lord of the Rings," has been invited as the final judge.

In addition, the CICAF features a comic summit forum on the theme of "creativity, brand and value."

At this event, industry insiders and government leaders will get together to discuss brand marketing, the development direction of Chinese cartoons and animation and how to protect the intellectual property of their work.

Meanwhile, the CICAF is working with British Embassy in Beijing for the third time to run a cartoon culture exchange forum.

Educational institutions like the Royal College of Art in London and Maryland Institute College of Art in the United States will also be represented.

Creative staff from the world-famous DreamWorks Studios in California will share their expertise and experience with Chinese counterparts.

Another keynote CICAF event is the comic artwork auction. Last year, lots went for a total of 13.248 million yuan (US$2.1 million).

By last week, this year's auction had received more than 500 items from renowned cartoonists - including Hua Junwu, Zhang Leping, Qu Jianfang and Murong Yindao.

The cosplay gala is another traditional CICAF highlight, attracting hordes of spectacularly attired cosplay lovers every year.

Last year, the CICAF attracted 2.08 million people. Contracts signed at the event totaled 14.6 billion yuan.
