THE new Dushu Lake Hotel offers comprehensive conference facilities in a scenic setting. It is the only hotel in Asia where famed Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory research institute holds academic conferences. Zhao Dan checks in.
The new Dushu Lake Hotel is the first five-star criterion in the new commercial, residential and entertainment hub of Suzhou Industrial Park. The recently opened conference hotel in the southeast part of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a luxurious and tranquil retreat, offering high-tech facilities.
Dushu Lake Hotel was built according to the architecture and landscape guidelines of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) in Long Island, New York. It is the site of CSHL international academic seminars, symposiums and conferences in Asia.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a private, non-profit research and education institution engaged in research in molecular biology and genetics to improve diagnostics and treatments for cancer, neurological disease and other ailments.
Dushu Lake Hotel is the only location outside the United States where the research institute established a branch.
"CSHL chose this place because of its tranquil, cozy environment and natural surroundings with a water view and houses scattered about," says Frank Guo, general manager of the hotel.
The hotel's dark gray roofs resemble traditional folk house roofs, and the simple and elegant design reflects the contemporary spirit of the hotel, which is tucked among trees.
The landscaping of greenery and rocks resembles the traditional Chinese gardens of Suzhou, and the use of natural materials and colors of wood and stone evoke the prosperity of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory also chose the location because of nearby institutes and universities that will take part in CSHL conferences.
"The place is somewhat similar to Long Island in New York," says Guo. "It is far from the hustle and bustle of city life, but also offers transport and living conveniences."
From the hotel, it's a 15-minute drive to the Suzhou-Jiaxing-Hangzhou Expressway, 18 minutes to the Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, and 20 minutes to the Suzhou Railway Station. The drive to Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport and Pudong International Airport is within two hours.
Dushu Lake Hotel offers comprehensive conference facilities and services. It offers 19 meeting rooms with high-tech facilities, two grand ballrooms each seating hundreds of guests and a multi-function room.
The hotel's Watson Auditorium seats more than 500 guests and can be used as a theater or cinema. It offers simultaneous interpretation facilities. It is named after James Watson, former chancellor of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and a Nobel Prize winner.
The hotel also offers extensive recreation facilities, including a gym, swimming pool, snooker room, karaoke room and mahjong room for Chinese guests.
General Manager Guo emphasizes that services are of the highest standard provided by a professional staff.
"We are alert to guests' need and we respond quickly and efficiently," he says.
He notes that the hotel conducted hundreds of tests of mattresses to determine which were most comfortable. The building uses ramps instead of staircases, making it accessible to people with handicaps.
"We offer service in a direct, uncomplicated way that makes our guests feel good," says Guo. "Guests will enjoy our specialized service and living in our hotel will be an unforgettable experience."
Staff and management keep a low profile in demonstrating their hospitality.
Everyone on the management team worked their way up in the hospitality industry, so they know how everything works, says Guo.
All have experience in international brand hotels.
"As a locally based hotel, we offer international-standard service with appealing local features," says Guo. "Our service philosophy is to provide guests with comfortable, cozy, safe and value-for-money service."
