Dynamic education in east China business hub
International Business School Suzhou (IBSS) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, is growing in size and influence as it becomes one of China’s leading international business schools.
With first-tier international faculty and a superb location in the heart of the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) — near major commercial centers such as Shanghai and Wuxi — IBSS is ideally situated to benefit from exchanges between business and academia.
Just last week the State Council, China’s cabinet, officially named SIP as the Comprehensive Open Innovation Pilot Zone in Jiangsu Province, the first such zone of its kind in the country.
“So our business school is really at the heart of the very exciting things that are happening to support and serve the development of the Chinese economy, particularly in terms of moving up the value chain,” said Sarah Dixon, dean of IBSS.
Established by two prestigious universities, Xi’an Jiaotong University China and University of Liverpool in the UK, IBSS at XJTLU has many advantages derived from its position within a multi-disciplinary university.
“In the old days, you could just study business, you could just study computer science, or you could just study engineering … But these days everybody needs to know something about the other person’s discipline,” Dixon said.
One of IBSS’s central aims is to develop global citizens and instill the value of its five guiding principles: internationalism, innovation, inspiration and integrity, which together create impact.
“We are particularly focused on making sure we support our students to think differently. It’s not just about transferring knowledge, it’s about enabling people to think from different perspectives, mixing people together to come up with new ideas,” she said.
IBSS also offers a learning and teaching environment that ensures all students graduate with the knowledge and skills to succeed in an ever-changing world.
“One thing we know about today’s world is that things change very quickly. What you knew about marketing 10 years ago, for example, is completely outdated. With all these new social media marketing tools, you need to be able to think quickly and move quickly. So the dynamic capabilities of being able to adapt to new situations and the environment are really important.”
IBSS is closely engaged with businesses to ensure that faculty and students are at the leading edge of developments in management, economics and finance. The school encourages students to apply their knowledge in different circumstances.
Furthermore, it boasts the first and only university-based financial trading lab in China, established in collaboration with Thompson Reuters. This facility allows MBA- and master’s-program students to gain a better understanding of the financial markets, an area that has made rapid progress in China.
The school also has strong relationships with IBM, the local government and the local data center, through which the school recently established a business analytics data center which is one of several other university research institutes in various disciplines.
“Big data is a huge area of growth in terms of education here,” said Dixon.
Over recent years, Suzhou has grown into one of the most developed cities in China and consistently ranks as one of the five largest local economies in the country.
SIP is home to a large number of multinational company offices and R&D centers. The park features a host of favorable social, economic and geographic conditions capable of sustaining continued growth at IBSS.
“I think the days when companies used to work in isolation are gone,” Dixon said. “More and more companies are expecting to get ideas from outside their confines in a process of open innovation. Education facilities like XJTLU and IBSS are really a great melting pot for ideas to support this process.”
“If you take our new international MBA program ... you don’t just learn a solo subject — like accounting, or finance or HR. These are all put together into an integrated curriculum to enable you to truly develop into a senior manager in the future.”
