Feel the foreign vibe

GUBEI area is located in the city's Changning District and is particularly favored by Shanghai's large population of East Asian expatriates which comprises of Japanese, Koreans and Taiwanese citizens. International schools, large apartment complexes and lots of Japanese and Korean shops can be found in this part of the town. Although not so close to the city center, Gubei is worth a visit as the area carries a foreign vibe slightly different to those experienced in other parts of Shanghai.

Nail boutique

There are no shortage of manicure and pedicure stands and salons in the Gubei area but Nail Boutique offers an environment in which the quality of service and ambience are impeccable. The warm, home-like ambience of the 30-square-meter nail salon soothes the mind immediately when you walk through the door. Customers can relax on the comfortable sofas with magazines and drinks while professional nail technicians beautify their hands and feet. The menu in both Chinese and Japanese indicates that the main customers here are Japanese, Taiwanese and locals. A basic manicure is priced at 88 yuan (US$13.39) and a pedicure 158 yuan. Aside from the simple treatments, girls are fond of getting their nails decorated to match the latest fashions. They use OPI products for nail colors and Cuccio and CND for hand and foot treatments. Popular treatments include CND Citrus treatment for hands (298 yuan) and the OPI Whitening foot spa (388 yuan). The 3,000-yuan membership card is great value and allows 30 percent off all services.

Hachimitsu-ya

For honey lovers, Hachimitsu-ya is a must-go. Run by a friendly Japanese owner, this shop has been open for almost eight years. It boasts eight different kinds of honey, all made in China and produced in a pollution-free environment, which makes them the purest type with no expiry date and no additives. Apart from tasting great, the honeys sold here also have some medicinal effects. Depending on your health problems, you can choose honey that can cure your cold, benefit your liver, ease the pain of a sprained ankle or simply make your skin look more beautiful. The most expensive jar - the Royal Jelly - will cost you 250 yuan but the prices for other types of honey range from 20 to 30 yuan. While in the shop you should also try one of the staple honey drinks - honey with ginger or lemon tea (25 yuan) or honey herbal tea (28 yuan). And if you're craving even more sweet things, try one of the desserts - all of them of course made from honey - honey sponge cake (10 yuan) or honey castella (25 yuan).

Delicious Food Garden

This small supermarket caters for Japanese and Korean residents in the area, and predominantly stocks food and other products from those countries. Delicious Food Garden promotes healthy eating and living at affordable prices. Fresh meat is the main product of the shop, and they also have a wide selection of vegetables. The store has its own meat supplier located in Qingdao City where all the animals are bred. Some of the meat is already marinated and prepared with different flavors such as pepper. The store sells low-fat pork and customers can also find tenderloin and sirloin priced at 39 yuan per 500g. The meat is freshly prepared and is hormone free. Also, the vegetables sold there are organic and the food is high end but at a reasonable price. They have another store in Shanghai located in Pudong New Area.

Cafe & deli natural

Open seven days a week, from lunch to a nightcap, this cozy Japanese-style cafe offers a wide selection of nutritious meals that you can top off with coffee or something stronger. The café offers five different sets for lunch, which are changed weekly (55 yuan including a soft drink, coffee or tea). Lunch time is when it gets really busy, filling up with Japanese housewives and their children. Prices for the dinner à la carte range from 120 to 180 yuan, including a glass of wine. On the menu you will find a fusion of Western and Japanese dishes, prepared by a well-known Japanese chef. Burgers, curries, pastas and pizzas are the most popular items on the menu. You can also hire the venue for private parties, at the cost of 6,000 yuan for one night (for around 30 people).
