Informal work space lures creative types

FOR those looking for an informal work space and some company - something between home, office and coffee shop - a new creative space COHUB offers a work space alternative.
The idea of a co-work space is catching on among small entrepreneurs and freelancers of all kinds, consultants, artists and many other people seeking a desk, phone, computer, office facilities and a comfortable environment.
Located on Huaihai Road M., the space is around 100 square meters. The main floor can accommodate as many as 10 people in a comfortable setting with furniture and lounge that can be used for meetings. Desk space can be reserved. The space provides meeting rooms, a convenient kitchen and a secluded outdoor space.
The setting has a very different vibe from many office settings. It is open to individuals and small groups.
"We feel it's important for people to have a place where they can feel productive but at the same time comfortable. That is why we came up with COHUB," co-founder Amir Nikoopour says.
Nikoopour, from the United States, has been in Shanghai for about a year and half and he works with his Chinese girlfriend Irene Ge. They felt Shanghai was missing a place where people felt comfortable at work. After a year of research, they developed COHUB, which is rare in the city.
"Our goal is to build and inspire the community around us and bring life to individual work. In a city of about 23 million, we want the isolation to end and we want to create an open office where people are free to work and share ideas with one another," Nikoopour says.
Prices are flexible. Space can be booked by the hour or by the day. There are two types of membership, one for daily discounts and one for a permanent desk space for 1,500 yuan (US$238) a month, including the use of office facilities.
"We wanted the space to feel open, creative, inspiring, motivating and productive. We wanted a place where freelancers, independent workers, artists, startup businesses, or anyone looking for a new place to work can feel comfortable and enjoy the place the call 'the office'," says Nikoopour.
Future plans include events, workshops and classes, with a 10-week Chinese language course currently on the cards.
