Love knows no bounds under Kissmas tree

THE phrase love knows no borders has proved especially apt at the “Kissmas” tree lighting ceremony in Xintiandi, as many partners from different countries have come to light up the world’s first interactive Christmas tree with a loving kiss.
“Cross-border love” was rare before in China but it has become far more common in recent years in cosmopolitan Shanghai. Couples from different countries were invited by Shanghai Daily to illuminate the whole shopping and entertainment complex simply by giving each other a sweet kiss.
Among those puckering up beneath the tree were Vanessa from Spain and Sebastian from Belgium, who have been married for a year and known each other for around five years.
In Shanghai on a one-week tour to celebrate Vanessa’s birthday, she said their romantic kiss under the Xintiandi tree was an amazing birthday gift — and a unique Christmas experience.
“I am so excited to join this kissing party and that the Kissmas tree witnessed the power of our love,” said Vanessa. “It was me and Sebastian who brought life to the lights!”
“We love this modern city Shanghai and it’s nice to discover new things here, so we’re glad to create a romantic moment beneath the tree” said Sebastian.
“With different cultural backgrounds, it is always interesting for us bouncing around ideas about new things — such as that magical kissmas concept,” said Sebastian.
“We like to explore together new things we’ve never seen before,” he added.
Even though it’s been cold outside, at Xintiandi the festive atmosphere was hot. And among the couples queuing around the tree were Wendy from Japan and Victor from South Korea, eager to express their love onstage.
Exchange students in the city, they fell in love when they met at the start of their first semester and were joining the Kissmas party for some festive fun.
“We like this magical Kissmas tree and are so happy to come here on our first Christmas together,” Wendy said.
“Wendy is the one I am looking for, she’s such a beautiful, kind and a typically refined Japanese girl,” said Victor.
