Shutterbugs capture rapid changes in everyday life

An upcoming citizens photography festival features daily life in Hangzhou, striking scenery, funny moments and collisions between tradition and modernity.

The Sixth Hangzhou Citizen Photography Festival kicks off on October 17 and runs for four days at the Baima Lake International Convention and Exhibition Center.

More than 4,000 photos, overwhelmingly by amateurs, will be on show.

Since its debut in 2000, the festival has received more than 60,000 submissions, 9,000 of them have been  exhibited.

It’s one more way Hangzhou introduces itself to the world. It focuses on ordinary people, with the idea of recording changes in their lives.

The works of 50 famous Hangzhou professional photographers will be exhibited in a section that includes the works of Andrew S.T. Wong, former chief photographer of Reuters, and Ruan Yizong, the Taiwanese master photographer.

Ruan will be on site to look at portfolios and recruit apprentices.

Seminars on photography will also be held.
