State, private health-care facilities offer services
In Shanghai, both state-owned and privately run medical facilities are available, and patients can choose health-care providers depending on their professional capability, price, environment and service.
For outpatients, check your medical insurance to see which expenses can be claimed at designated medical facilities.
Dozens of medical facilities in Shanghai, including international departments of public hospitals and private clinics, are now covered by international medical insurance.
Public hospitals
The best-known comprehensive hospitals are Ruijn, Huashan and Zhongshan. Each is listed in the top 10 hospitals in the nation, which takes into consideration their overall capability.
But many big hospitals are also strong in their specialized departments, and some special hospitals for maternity and pediatrics are also ranked among the best in the nation.
All leading state-owned hospitals have VIP departments, which offer a better environment and charge more than ordinary services. High-end experts are available at such VIP departments, which usually have connections with international insurance companies.
Privately run hospitals
Apart from the state-owned facilities, there are many private hospitals and clinics in the city.
Dozens of international hospitals and clinics have foreign investment and are staffed by international management teams and medical personnel.
International medical teams have no language and culture barriers with many expatriates, a key selling point for these facilities. Expatriates comprise most of the patient load of international hospitals and clinics.
International hospitals and clinics have a growing presence in the local health-care market. International hospitals in Shanghai performed 370,000 outpatient and emergency services and nearly 10,000 inpatient hospital procedures in 2010, earning 1 billion yuan (US$163.57 million).
Many international facilities have agreements with leading state-owned hospitals, which can handle patients whose condition is too complicated for international facilities.
