HOSS Vetry:
NATIONALITY: American
Profession/Title: Hotelier/Multi-Property Vice President & General Manager of the Ritz-Carlton Sanya, Yalong Bay
How often do you travel?
Six to 12 times per year (business and pleasure combined)
Favorite traveling style? Flying is definitely my favorite style of traveling and I always like to travel by an international airline where safety and service are the top priorities in their business model. These are my favorite airlines in the order: Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways and ANA All Nippon Airways.
Q: What do you always do after returning from a trip?
A: Share photos.
Q: What do you always search for during a trip?
A: Unique and cultural experiences. I don’t like places that are too commercialized or crowded.
Q: What do you always pack?
A: I pack the basics but prefer to go light when traveling to my destination and come back with a full luggage. I like shopping.
Q: Do you have any tips about seating on a flight?
A: Yes, when flying short distances, I recommend for tall people to sit on the aisle and depending whether you are a right or left handed person, arrange the correct side of the airplane you are seating in. Always book your seats ahead of time and get to the airport early enough to make sure your seat is secured. I recently traveled internationally to Guangzhou on a connecting flight and when I got to my connecting flight counter, I found out my seat was reassigned to another passenger despite the fact that I had a boarding pass. Unfortunately, this is becoming more common with some of the domestic airlines.
Q: Best in-flight meal or activity?
A: When I fly within China, I try to catch up with my emails, however it is always good to download a couple of new movies on my Ipad. For best in-flight meal, I have to say nothing beats Qatar Airways or Singapore Airlines.
Q: How do you get over jet lag?
A: First, keep myself up and adjust my sleeping schedule according to the destination I’m travelling to. Also drink lots of water while on the flight; eat light on the plane, avoid starch and greasy food; drink little alcohol on the flight.
Q: What are your favorite hotels?
A: The Ritz-Carlton. Also small boutique and family-owned inns, as well as hotels that are unique to the particular city traveling to.
Q: What do you value most when choosing a hotel?
A: Cleanliness, location, safety, reputation, service, good food and beverage offerings, especially breakfast.
Q: What hotels do you look forward to staying at in the future?
A: No particular brand other than Ritz-Carlton, but generally, when I take personal trips, I prefer smaller and more intimate hotels and love friendly hotels where the employees are genuinely happy to see you as their guest.
Q: Recommend one of your favorite destinations. Why is it so special?
A: I like Korea, Bangkok and Turkey for the food, Hong Kong or Tokyo for shopping and sightseeing.
Q: Where are you planning to go next and why?
A: I would like to explore Japan more in the coming year. It is a unique country with endless sightseeing.
