Titanic - immortal luxury and romance II
THE Bible Corinthians 13:
Love is patient, love is kind. … It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. … And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
The Titanic - In the past days, she has been the symbol of true love and romance.
What is the romance in your mind?
Once passionate kiss, hinting eye contact, hand-holding in shyness or deep hug
First love mixed sweet and painful
Fanatic love
Blessed marriage
Lifetime expectation or permission, even with your life.
Let's enter stories of true love on the Titanic.
"We have lived together for many years. Where you go, I go."
- Ida Straus (First class passenger)
The Straus family owned R.H. Macy's department store in New York City. R.H. was also a blockade runner during the American Civil War in the early 1860s. His son Isidor Straus and his wife Ida were aboard the Titanic, accompanied by tens of their own attendants and waiters. You can imagine his wealth and elegant living style.
After the Titanic struck an iceberg, women and children first got into lifeboats. That meant Staus had to abandon the chance of survival to stay on the Titanic. When his wife Ida got into the lifeboat, she changed her mind and returned to her husband. The couple, both older than 60, went hand-in-hand and sat on deck chairs on the Titanic's promenade.
Roberta Elizabeth M. Maioni was a beautiful, 21-year-old maid to an English countess. She fell in love at first sight with a young crewman on the Titanic. However, they had to choose between life and death when the Titanic was sinking. He gave his life jacket to Roberta and put her in a lifeboat. They gazed at each other while the lifeboat was launched and said good-bye in silence. Roberta survived, but the young man, like Jack in the film "Titanic," went down with the ship. A badge of the White Star Line was the last love token he gave her.
The scene is like that in the movie. Roberta's story inspired the film "Titanic."
Another legendary story was from Mrs Edwards (Helen Churchill Hurgerford) Candee, a famous author and interior designer. Six men threw themselves at Helen's feet, the charming, 53-year-old woman with two children. But Helen deeply fell in love with a 45-year-old British artifacts merchandiser. Thanks to rich imagination from the talented lady in love, we can see so many classic plots in the movie, such as Jack and Rose enjoying the flying feeling at the prow, breathtaking escaping from cabin to deck.
As passengers boarded the lifeboats, the Titanic's chief purser, Herbert McElroy, mustered the ship's orchestra on the boat deck, ordering musicians to play in order to maintain calm. As each boat was loaded and launched, the eight musicians played lively tunes. The musicians were neither crew, nor passengers with a chance to escape.
Instead, they played on. After the lifeboats were gone, orchestra leader Wallace Hartley lifted his bow for a final tune. Perhaps he played "Nearer, My God, to Thee," the song he wanted to play at his funeral.
None of the Titanic's musicians survived.
(All of the above-mentioned passengers can be found in the Memorial Wall of the Titanic Artifacts Exhibition.)
Sadly, there are no conservation methods to preserve the ship itself, which is slowly being consumed by iron-eating microbes. Scientists predict this process will cause the Titanic to implode and collapse on itself in 40 to 90 years' time. However, recovered artifacts will remain long after the ship is gone as a reminder of the legendary liner, the fragility of life and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
