Travel back in time at these museums
SUNDAY is International Museum Day. Shanghai Daily selects four of the city’s more than 100 museums, many of which will waive admission charges for the celebration of culture and history.
Tou-Se-We Museum
This museum was converted from the north building — the only remaining part — of the former Tou-Se-We Orphanage, which was established during Emperor Tongzhi’s reign (1861-1875) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
The museum takes a closer look at the orphanage’s far-reaching influence.
Regular admission: 5 yuan per person or 3 yuan each for groups of more than five people
Free tomorrow and Sunday. Open until 9pm on Sunday.
Shanghai Film Museum
The Shanghai Film Museum is at the original site of Shanghai Film Group Corp in Xujiahui. It screens films and film clips while also exhibiting old props, costumes, memorabilia and equipment. Important events in the history of Shanghai cinema, actors, actresses, directors and more will be covered in exhibits.
A 4D theater and several film studios allow visitors to act as an actor, director or camera man.
Regular admission: 60 yuan; 30 yuan for students
Free on Sunday.
Jewish Refugee Museum
The museum is housed in the former Ohel Moshe Synagogue built in 1927. It traces the period of time when Shanghai gave refuge to Jewish people fleeing Nazi Germany. Between 1937 and 1941, Shanghai gave sanctuary to around 25,000 Jewish refugees.
The museum contains many cultural relics, scrolls and photographs of Jewish life in the city at the time. It contains a database with the names of Jewish refugees who lived in Shanghai.
Regular admission: 50 yuan
Free on Sunday and Monday. No admission after 3:30pm.
Long Museum West Bund
The newly opened museum is the second privately owned museum of super collectors Liu Yiqian and his wife Wang Wei. They are one of the country’s biggest collectors of ancient and contemporary art.
Highlights of the collection include two Song Dynasty (960-1279) pieces and another five from the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368).
Regular admission: 50 yuan; 25 yuan for students and teachers
Free on Sunday.
