Walks take you into heart of central Shanghai
LAST week we introduced you to three routes for casual walking in the central area of the city. Considering there are so many places worth visiting across the city center, we will bring you three more choices this time. All three routes include the city’s most famous sites, including People’s Square, the Bund and Yuyuan Garden.
Ex-race club at People’s Square
Briton W. Hogg acquired 311 square kilometers of farms in Shanghai in 1861 and built Shanghai Race Club, the biggest horse-racing course in the Far East Region. Eventually, increasing numbers of roads and shikumen (stone- gate buildings) lanes were built to attract more and more residents, and additional luxury hotels and cinemas rose up to make the area a paradise for powerful men.
The race course was surrounded by Nanjing Road W., Xizang Road, Wusheng Road and Huangpi Road. The club was rebuilt into today’s People’s Park and People’s Square after 1949. Although the former buildings and track of the club were replaced, the area retains its position as the center of this international metropolis.
Distance: 4 kilometers
Route: Ningbo Rd — Wufu Lane—Nanjing Rd E. — Shitan Lane — Ningbo Rd — Gujia Lane — Niuzhuang Rd — Fengyang Rd — Dingxing Rd — Huanghe Rd — Fengyang Rd — Xinchang Rd — Nanjing Rd W. — Nanjing Rd E.
Old city area
The old city area of Shanghai is usually called Laochengxiang by locals. Back in 1549 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Shanghai had its city wall, which is today’s Renmin Road. The old city area refers to the region inside and around Renmin Road.
Today, this area preserves a lot of historic sites hidden among lanes and neighborhoods. Yuyuan Garden is certainly the most famous of these sites in the area. Considering the entire area is surrounded by Renmin Road, we will not specify a detailed route for you. You can wander around the very traditional and scenic area at will. If you get lost, just remember to find one of the two main roads, Henan Road S. and Fuxing Road E., to walk out.
The Bund
The Bund was first a 3-kilometer causeway along the Huangpu River. In the 19th century, the Western countries invaded China and turned the land into a grand international port.
As a result, many Western-style buildings rose up along the Bund. Most of the buildings have been very well-preserved, and the Bund is at the top of most lists for tourists visiting Shanghai.
