Where to frolic and find family fun in the sun

IT'S summer again, time to get out of the air-con and have a good sweat. Here are some cool destinations in Shanghai to beat the heat and have fun.

Jinshan City Beach

Jinshan District

There's no place better to spend a hot summer's day than by the sea. Jinshan District's coastal stretch offers a pleasurable seaside experience. The City Beach is open free through September 10.

A series of beach events includes the beach music festival from July 20-22, featuring more than 20 music bands, X-games and beach parties.

? By car: Take the S4 Expressway, get off at Tingwei Expressway Exit. Turn left, drive south along Tingwei Expressway to Jinshan Avenue and turn in to Weiling Road. The beach is at the end of the road.

? By public transport: Take Metro Line 1 to Jinjiang Park Station, then take Shimei Bus Line at the Southwest Bus Station.

Bihaijinsha (Blue Sea and Golden Sand) Beach

Fengxian District

The water paradise is a cool destination for day-trippers in hot summer. It features a kids' zone, an open-air four-dimensional cinema and ice sculpture exhibitions. There are various sports such as water skiing, climbing, balloon releasing as well as beach volleyball and football.

In addition, the nearby seafood town gives visitors a taste of summer and seafood bounty, including all kinds of fish, crabs, clams and shrimp.

Bihaijinsha also boasts a square for kite flying and a museum of Peking Opera costumes.

? By public transport: Take Xinhai Bus Line at the South Square of the Xinzhuang Station of Metro Line 1. It takes around one and a half hour.

Jinjiang Park

Minhang District

The amusement park in the city's southwest opens its night market from July 14 to August 31. It has become an annual tradition in Shanghai's summer nightlife. The park offers hosts of thrillers, such as Motorcycle Roller Coaster, Cave Speed, Sounding Shuttle, Hurricane Flying Chair, Canyoning and many others rides. Children can find their favorite cartoon friends in colorful costumes.

Oriental Land

Qingpu District

This summer the theme park launches its Water Carnival from July 1 through August 31. Lots of new water games and facilities offer a cool fresh summer.

Oriental Land is a large recreational and social center with plenty of entertainment facilities at the west rim of Shanghai, on the shores of Dianshan Lake. The park is a good place for camping, picnicking, outdoor entertainment, water entertainment and team building.

? By car: Take G50 Expressway (Huqingping Expressway), take Zhujiajiao Exit and turn right onto Huqingping Road. Turn left and drive 3km to Oriental Land.

? By public transport: Qingpu Tourism Route A at the Shanghai Stadium from 7:30am to 11am.

Dino Beach

Minhang District

As the city's only aquatic theme park, the beach offers a place where people can plunge into the water and enjoy various kinds of entertainment.

A highlight is the annual Beach Honey Contest, a gala of sexy ladies in hot bikinis. The winner gets 800,000 yuan (US$125,770).

Covering almost 8 hectares, the park offers more than 30 water games and facilities. It replicates natural environments such as forests, rivers, fields and many other settings. Its Pirate Boat, Happy Water Factory and Forest Exploration are designed for kids, while adults can try the water pipes and Bermuda that can create three wave heights, up to around 1 meter.
