Where to unwind with a wine
SHANGHAI nightlife just got a whole lot better! The city is already spoiled for choice with dining and drinking venues but here are some of our recommendations of where you can enjoy delicate cuisine and fine wine.
Avalon Wood Grill and Wine Bar
Opened last April, this contemporary wood-grill restaurant is well known for its superlative wine list and creative cooking.
The cozy dining room with its earthy tones makes you feel as if you are anywhere but Shanghai, and owner Howard Quan's background as an ASC Fine Wines vice president guarantees that you are sure to find something you will like on the wine list.
The menu is designed to surprise with some simple classics to wonderfully flavored signature dishes based on fresh, locally sourced, seasonal produce.
"Our talented chef from the US and his team provide inventive cooking with intriguing combinations of ingredients," says Quan.
On the main course menu you can find seafood risotto, roast sea bass, tandoori salmon, Australian sirloin, Qingdao tenderloin, miso lamb rack and mushroom ravioli with romesco.

Maison Pourcel
Maison Pourcel on Shaanxi Road is set in Shanghai's famous Red House building in the heart of the former French concession area. The historic building, home to the most celebrated Western-cuisine restaurant in the 1930s, holds significant emotional ties with the local community as it is here that many of them had their first Western-food dining experience.
Today Maison Pourcel provides one of the best French fine dining and wine experiences in Shanghai and is regarded as a true showcase of the Pourcel brothers' restaurant philosophy.
The restaurant was opened last August, after the immense success of the Pourcel brothers' restaurant 6SENS in the France Pavilion at the World Expo 2010.
Besides the fine wines, cozy environment and beautiful terrace, plenty of dishes from their recently renewed summer menu are strongly recommended here.

Lifeismore Lounge Bar
Lifeismore Lounge Bar in the 800 Show Creative Factory is a good place for people not merely to taste fine wines, but also read books, listen to live music and, of course, enjoy creative Western and Japanese foods.
In the restaurant which can hold a maximum of 60 customers, the wine bar features a bookshelf holding books about literature, design, art, architecture, travel and philosophy. The home-style decoration and atmosphere makes customers feel comfortable, enabling them to spend their leisure time casually and peacefully.
On the menu you can find creative Japanese food such as sushi and sashimi, as well as many kinds of Western-style sandwiches.
Opened last year, the venue recently introduced a resident band. Every Sunday night from 7pm, a three-piece band performs on the small stage close to the customers.
"The music styles are mostly blues, soft rock, jazz and American folk to accompany the quiet environment of the restaurant," says the band's guitarist Paul Hicks, who has been working in Shanghai for six years as an English teacher.
