An enjoyable start to IB — The YCIS Year 12 retreat

RECENTLY, Year 12 student had an IB retreat on Sun Island, a big wellness resort on the outskirts of Shanghai with many different kinds of activities including: golf, swimming, and karting. Our experience at the retreat can be divided into three parts: learning about the various components of IB through teachers presentations, participating in a rage of team building activities, and going through the BafaBafa culture simulation.

To begin our experience, we started with an orientation that included an overview of the IB program. We not only learned more about subject expectations in IB, but also about the Extended Essay, CAS, and the Theory Of Knowledge curriculum. Since we were able to understand more about our subjects and learned exactly what was expected from us, this made us all feel much more comfortable with the IB program.

After the presentation, we divided into teams to participate in “laughter yoga.” It was very strange for everyone at first, seeing the demonstrators trying to laugh intentionally to bring out the good hormones in the body, but as we participated, it was clear that everyone was enjoying the experience. An hour of non-stop laughing made us all feel energized, and we realized just how much laughter can reduce stress, and draw positive energy to our bodies. After this experience, many of us vowed that we would gather together regularly to participate in our own laughter yoga sessions over our next two years in the IB program.

On the third day of the retreat, we came back to YCIS to do a BafaBafa Simulation. In this activity, everyone was divided into groups that represented fictitious cultures, in order to experience what it was like to adjust to a culture they were not familiar with. The simulation was very successful, and afterward, we gathered to have a discussion about the experience and we concluded that in order to adapt to a culture, it is very important to be open-minded to the new things one might encounter throughout his or her lifetime.

All 2014-15 YCIS Gubei campus Year 12 students considered this trip as our turning point; an opportunity to move on from two years of IGCSE to the next chapter of our school experience — the IB Diploma, and what a great start it was to IB!
