Culture taught with Chinese
At British International School Shanghai Puxi we help students acclimatize to their new Chinese home in a lot of ways. Not only in the classroom, but also in extracurricular activities, students have the opportunity to learn about and experience Chinese culture and language.
Mandarin is taught as a foreign language for all students up until Year 9, when they choose their options for IGCSE. Teaching doesn’t take place only inside a classroom. We take trips out to places like Yuyuan Garden, where the students practice their spoken Mandarin with local Chinese people, interviewing them, bargaining with vendors and ordering food in restaurants.
We also issue students with a “Mandarin Passport,” which they are challenged to fill as quickly as they can outside school by speaking to Chinese people and recording in their passport who they spoke to and what they discussed.
We also run an exchange program with a local high school for our Year 12 students. It’s a great way for the students to practice their Mandarin and really get a taste of what life is like for their Chinese counterparts.
Chinese history and culture is also taught cross-curriculum, so, where possible, it is threaded through other lessons: history, art and Theory of Knowledge, for example. It is important that children living in China learn more about the country and its people than just their language.
There are a lot of activities that introduce our students to the Chinese way of life. Chinese cookery, dance, games, calligraphy and paper cutting all help to give a deeper insight. In the past we’ve held workshops to demonstrate cultural traditions: the Peking Opera has visited our school to perform and run workshops.
