Dulwich partners with parents in workshops

This year, Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi launched a series of new Parent Academy workshops. These workshops are specifically targeted to focus on young people’s social, emotional and mental health, and align with our belief that to achieve success, children must be happy and healthy.

Within our sessions, we discuss what social, emotional and mental health is, and how this impacts wellbeing of young people. What are the social situations young people today find themselves in? How does emotional competence impact learning? Why is mental health an increasingly concerning issue for young people?

It is important to think about and address these questions, and as parents, think about how we can support our children in a world where they will face challenges, be this in learning, friendships and relationships or work.

Research into how wellbeing affects academic success is well noted. At Dulwich, our core values culminate in high expectations where our students, in turn, have high expectations for themselves. We take pride in not only our rigorous academic program, but also in the wide range of enrichment opportunities on offer to our students, such as co-curricular activities and residential trips.

This helps to develop the skills and character traits they require for the 21st century. Studies show there is a direct correlation between positive mental health and academic success, so it is truly in the best interest of both educators and parents to ensure young people are happy and have good wellbeing.

Both parents and schools play a crucial role in supporting children to have good wellbeing. Parents play a critical role in not only providing learning opportunities outside of the classroom, but also in providing a safe and secure environment for young people to truly be themselves and flourish emotionally, socially and mentally. Beyond educational achievement, parental engagement is associated with various indicators of student development, including:

• Better social skills

• Improved behavior

• Enhanced ability to adapt

• A greater sense of personal competence

• Better ability to manage their emotions

• Ability to make decisions and problem solve

• Autonomy and independence

The purpose of parental engagement is to enhance student wellbeing and promote academic achievement. It is important to align the approaches and strategies we use within the school and home. Therefore, the Parent Academy workshops are a fantastic time to engage in core topics that center around areas that affect young people’s wellbeing. Parent Academy workshops are a chance to procure knowledge and advice from specialists in these areas, and give our parents the knowledge and confidence to talk about difficult but important matters with their children.

Our Parent Academy workshops are a good example of bringing together an entire community for the benefit of the students in our care. We look forward to even more enriching conversations, as we continue our journey of ensuring the highest levels of wellbeing in our students.
