Earth’s future as seen by tomorrow’s leaders

More than 1,600 students from about 100 Chinese and international schools in Shanghai shared their thoughts about environmental protection and the Earth’s future at the 2021 Covestro Cup iDEALShanghai English Essay Competition.
The competition, sponsored by the Chinese arm of German-based polymer producer Covestro, was organized by Shanghai Daily with the theme “Shaping the Future, Waste to Value.”
In the first round, the students submitted an essay on one of three topics: reducing or ending plastic waste, designing an installation or ecosystem to promote plastics’ recycling and minimizing litter, especially in the oceans.
The contestants submitted videos of themselves speaking on their chosen topics in the second round. The videos were viewed by some 50,000 people online, who selected 10 finalists in each age category. Finalists presented their ideas and answered questions from judges on June 30.
In this August edition, we will publish articles by the 22 winners. Read the thoughts and suggestions from the youngsters. Some of the articles have been abridged due to space limitations.
