Going bush walking and scuba diving in South Africa
THIS past summer, me and eight other Shanghai Community International School students joined a group from Shanghai United International School and a group from the Netherlands to go on a biological expedition to South Africa. We spent 24 exhausting hours on a plane, seven hours on a bus, and two hours on a truck before we arrived at camp.
The first day our group started off with lectures on the bush. The guys went on a bush walk with two of the guides and saw giraffes, buffalo, and some birds while the girls went on a game drive through the bush and saw even more.
Everyday we would spend half of the day in lectures doing things like bird and tree identification, or working with insects. The other half we were in the bush doing things like surveying habitats for animal health, or game and bird surveys. At night we would have different activities such as debates on trophy hunting, different presentations, a night drive, and even a night sleeping out in the bush.
After the first week in the bush, we took a 12-hour transfer to Sodwanna Bay by the ocean. Here we stayed in tents. The day after we got to the beach we went snorkeling and saw a whale and the tip of a manta ray. Those of us with scuba diving experience went on two dives and saw things like a green turtle, eels, and a plethora of different fish. This went on for the rest of the week with people diving, snorkeling and going on boat rides. On the last night some children from Sodwanna performed a traditional Zulu dance for us.
We had so many great experiences, met new friends, and made lifelong memories.
