Having fun and learning life lessons in Yangshuo

ON October 20, I and the other Year 7 students at BISS Pudong hopped on a plane and flew to a place that we would never forget. During our trip to Yangshuo in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, we learnt how to cooperate with each other and that you must never give up — even if facing your most dreaded fears.

Some of the fun activities we did were rock climbing, hiking, biking and caving — in which we swam in mud baths.

“I climbed to the top of all of the rocks even though there were some that I thought that I couldn’t do, but I still did them because my friends convinced me that they were fun and easy to climb,” said Elodie.

We had to find a way to be brave even if some students did fall off their bikes.

Mark said, “It was really scary because we were riding our bikes on a really narrow path, when my bike just started to wobble and suddenly I just fell into the ditch on the side of the path. Even though it really hurt, I just wanted to get to the end of the trail and say that I made it, so I hopped onto my bike and carried on.”

More than half our time in Yangshou was spent doing service work in the community.

In Shanghai we raised 12,000 yuan (US$1,930) to buy recycling bins and then in Yangshou we taught a local school how to recycle and what all the words meant — recycle, waste, pollution, rubbish and so on.

Year 7s then introduced some people who lived in the city to recycling, so we set up a stall in the main part of town. This was hard because there was a lot of difficulty understanding what people were saying.

Some people even stole the pink bags that we were giving to residents interested in recycling, but we were still as determined as we had been when we started.

On the last day most of us didn’t want to leave the beautiful city. “This has been the best trip ever and we are never going to forget it,” said Tiffany and Maggie.
