Helping Heart to Heart captures hearts at school

Four years ago, I arrived at Pudong International Airport with six duffle bags and two teenage girls, ready to start a new adventure in China.

It wasn’t long before the answer came to me. I was asked to join the Middle School leadership for Heart to Heart, a charity that helps young children in need of life-saving heart surgeries.

Heart to Heart is supported by volunteers and 100 percent of the funding goes to the surgeries. The transparency of the organization and the authenticity really drew me in.

During my time with Heart to Heart, I’ve been happy to see the entire Concordia community get involved. The creativity in our school and the desire to help this organization is abundant: Elementary students raised support through the One Hen Project; Girl Scouts have sold teddy bears, knitting creations and bracelets they made themselves; middle school students regularly make and sell baked goods and have created websites to raise awareness and support, and high school students are heading up in-school fundraisers and using their talents to help the less fortunate.

When a student comes up and says, “Ms Abel, do you think the Heart to Heart kids could use this?” My heart smiles!

Our students, staff and families are generous and our empathy has grown for others outside of the Concordia community.

Our families want to make a difference in the world and in China while they live here. My heart’s desire is for our students to see that we are blessed and be willing to give back.
