Helping students make healthy, informed choices
CONCORDIA'S health education curriculum is guided by Christian values when educating our students to make healthy, informed choices.
Through creative, engaging activities, Grade 5 to 12 students are challenged to consider topics covered our abstinence-based sex education unit. Topics include responsible and healthy relationships, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and diseases (STDs), and the exploration of an abstinence-based approach to healthy sexuality.
One creative way of communicating with students is the use of a health questionnaire box. Students are given a blank card and encouraged to think of a question they may not feel comfortable asking out loud in class or at home. The cards are anonymously dropped in the box and used at the end of the unit during review and reflection time.
Some previous examples of questions pulled from the health box include: "Aside from abstinence, how can one prevent getting STIs?" "Is sex the only way to pick up an STI?" "Should I date while I'm in high school, or wait to date until college?" "How do I talk to my parents about birth control even if I'm not sexually active?"
Concordia counselors and health educators take a collaborative approach, involving health care providers and parents.
In the past, Concordia counselors have invited a panel of Parkway Health doctors to our school to speak on various topics including substance abuse, clubbing, dangers of date rape drugs, unwanted sexual activity and sexually transmitted infections and diseases.
In addition to working with health care providers, at the beginning of each school year, parents are informed of the various topics being discussed in health class and the importance of keeping the lines of communication open.
Parents are also encouraged to create dialogue at home with their child on these critical topics, especially when focusing on substance abuse and sex education, keeping in mind we believe that parents are a child's first teacher.
