Hong Kong campus all Ivey

UNLIKE most other Western business schools entering Asia, the University of Western Ontario's Richard Ivey School of Business decided to establish a presence that was "100 percent Ivey," according to Professor Kathleen Slaughter, Ivey's dean in Asia.

"We wanted our students in Asia to earn an Executive MBA degree that was truly equivalent in every respect to one from our Canadian campus," Slaughter says. "As a result, our program in Hong Kong is fully taught by Ivey faculty from our home campus. We even built a customized facility in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center to cater to our specific needs."

Slaughter says the "100 percent Ivey" approach ensures its unique learning experience is replicated in its Hong Kong campus.

"The learning experience at Ivey has been described as exhilarating and life-changing. At its core is the Ivey case study method - a hands-on, learn-by-doing approach immersing students in complex, real-world business scenarios. It is action-oriented and highly interactive. Using Ivey faculty from Canada to teach the entire EMBA program in Hong Kong ensures that the Ivey experience is fully maintained."

Ivey's faculty are respected globally for their case teaching expertise and are highly sought after by other schools. Alongside Harvard, Ivey is one of the world's two most important producers of business cases, and the largest producer of current Asian cases.

"For the case method to work effectively, you also need world-class facilities designed to facilitate interaction and lively discussion," Slaughter explains. This is why Ivey purpose-built a facility in Hong Kong, featuring two large classrooms designed for case teaching, as well as 11 breakout rooms for small group discussions.

Ivey's EMBA program in Hong Kong is designed for working executives from around the region. It is an 18-month, weekend-based program, with students attending classes about two weekends a month.

"Many students fly in from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and Japan," he says. "They come for a top-tier global management education and the Ivey experience, right here in the heart of Hong Kong."
