Kids showed how small acts add up

“Higher! Higher!” The squeals of delight filled the playground as I helped young Tom gain momentum on an old swing that he loved. Glancing at the other children, I could not help but feel touched at their laughter over the smallest things. Always seeming to brighten the surroundings, their contagious smiles showed their determination to overcome their blindness.

I was privileged to have been given the opportunity to volunteer at the Shining Star Blind Orphanage, which is home to five children with either partial or full blindness. I was nervous before my first visit, however, just as the door opened, a little girl rushed forward and raised her arms eagerly, waiting to be picked up.

The enthusiastic welcome demonstrated their excitement at receiving visitors and made me want to interact with the children even more. I volunteered at the orphanage every Thursday for two months, each session bringing about new fulfilling memories.

One of many prominent moments was during February, when it unexpectedly snowed. I excitedly took the children outside to experience the rare occasion. Waving their arms exuberantly and feeling the plethora of soft flakes melt on their skin, their unmistakable looks of happiness could only fuel a warmth inside me.

My trips to the orphanage have proved to be among the most fruitful experiences that opened up to me the essence of volunteer work. I was taught that acts of kindness, no matter how seemingly small, can mean a great deal to someone else, adding up to positively impact the world.
