Learning to lead through important volunteer work

HI there. I am Josh from Shanghai United International School, Jiaoke Campus. Now I am in Grade 12 and will be graduating in a couple of months, but I really love my campus — all the teachers, peers and friends.

I remember the first time I introduced myself to the class, and how awkwardly I behaved, the first time to be taught a class all in English, the first time to live in a dormitory with three other boys, and the first time to have a counselor to guide me during the most important times of my life.

The BC education in SUIS Jiaoke has also changed me in different ways. During the three years, my peers and I reestablished the Student Council; we organized volunteer events in various places in Shanghai, including a children’s hospital, Shanghai Library and Minhang Migrant School, a school for kids whose parents came from other provinces.

By doing all these volunteer activities, my peers and I strongly felt the calling to expand our voluntary actions. As a result, we organized a non-profit organization called Tuck In, designed clothes for and established several of our own volunteer sites in poor communities. These events enriched my life and gradually transformed me into a leader among my peers.

Besides all these leadership roles I perform at school, I also love to travel during my leisure time.

Last summer, I went to Turkey with my family. The mild, modernized Islamic country soon grabbed my attention as I walked out of the Istanbul Atatürk Airport.

The city of Istanbul, once known as Constantinople, is a metropolis no smaller than Shanghai! Without hesitating, we went to downtown Istanbul and visited several tourist sites, including the famous Blue Mosque by Ottoman sultan Ahmed I, Dolmabahçe Palace, Topkap Palace and the church of Hagia Sophia.

In the following days, my family and I went to other cities in Turkey and visited many historical relics of the ancient Greek and Byzantine cultures. This trip enriched my life a lot and allowed me to see  diverse civilizations from prehistoric times to modern days.
