Meeting champion of chimps
WHEN the secondary students at YCIS heard that Dr Jane Goodall had arrived in Shanghai, many of us were eager to see her.
On October 31, a bus full of students, teachers and some parents from YCIS - Pudong joined an audience from 21 other international schools to celebrate an evening with the famous chimpanzee expert.
Dr Goodall gave a speech that was inspiring to everyone who attended, encouraging us to "never lose hope in whatever you do." She told many stories that were sad and touching, mostly about chimpanzees. It is easy to see she has a loving heart. She can mesmerize people with her optimistic words.
Afterwards our students got their pictures taken with her. We presented a cheque of 25,000 yuan (US$4,010) to sponsor our school's fourth, 1,000-tree forest with the Roots and Shoots Million Tree Project to help ensure the prosperity of our environment. Dr Goodall expressed her gratitude for it, and our students said it was an honor to be in her presence.
At the conclusion of the evening, Dr Goodall gave a hug to all of us and told us to always believe in ourselves. She was swarmed by the students from all of the different schools and signed autographs for all of us. "I won't be able to sleep tonight," remarked Year 10 student Rachel, after Dr Goodall hugged her.
It was an amazing experience for all the students.
