Original student production premieres in YCIS Black Box Theater

YCIS Shanghai Year 11 drama students wrote and performed "Failure Is Not An Option," an original work, in the school's new Black Box Theater. Performed two days before National Suffragette Day, the production revolves around how women endured suffering to earn their right to vote. A doctor is troubled by the hunger strike. A young girl struggles between her former life and her beliefs. A female warden confronts her arrested daughter.

All of the students contributed to the script and stage play, which included studying the history, clothes and lifestyles during that period of time. The IGCSE exam has specific requirements such as time, equal performance opportunities and plot, yet the students kept it creative by analyzing the effect on the audience and focusing on the main intention of the piece.

Another factor that made the production a success was the construction of the dedicated Black Box Theater. The room is a stimulus for high-class performance, creating an ambient atmosphere. A room purely for drama, it contains a great light and sound system, soundproof walls and doors, and a rebuilt stage. "Failure Is Not An Option" had the honour of being the first piece performed on this stage.
