SEL key to students’ development and success

At the Western International School of Shanghai, we believe that social and emotional learning (SEL) is the responsibility of all teachers, and will benefit our entire learning community.

As an International Baccalaureate World School offering all four IB programs, our aim is to “create a more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect” — and SEL plays an important role in this mission. We aim to develop skills in the domains of self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and decision making. The protective factors that SEL contributes to improved and sustained mental health are well documented, and help to prepare our students for the future — including the unexpected — while encouraging a growth mindset.

In Secondary school, we offer many opportunities to approach SEL in fun and meaningful ways. Our students participate in small-group advisory classes every day with a focus on SEL.

All teachers have been trained in restorative justice approaches to building a community of care — most importantly through the community circle, facilitating the discussion of non-academic topics such as identity, relationships, future planning and cross-cultural communication. Our students also set academic and personal goals, and consider what they might want to accomplish in the future.

SEL is embedded into our curriculum across the IB programs, as teachers develop Approaches to Learning skills such as social, affective and self-management skills in each unit. Our co-curricula activities provide many opportunities to develop leadership, communication skills, confidence and self-knowledge through participation with the Global Alliance for Innovative Learning, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Model United Nations, iShare, Student Council and a wide variety of athletic opportunities.

Finally, our Student Support Services Team is dedicated to supporting SEL through proactive and reactive individual and group interventions targeting areas such as study habits, life skills, social skills and personal growth.

Our school counsellors and nursing staff also lead a monthlong Teen Wellness program, addressing age-appropriate topics related to physical development, forming healthy relationships, establishing boundaries, identity, diversity and sexuality.
