SUIS Pudong campus grades filling up quickly

Shanghai United International School (SUIS) Pudong campus students were invited to meet the Vice-chancellor (principal), Professor Andrew Hamilton of Oxford University. As president of the Shanghai Oxford and Cambridge Alumni Society, James Morris, principal of SUIS Pudong, was honored to host the inaugural Oxford China Talking Lecture, making Shanghai the first city outside England to host such a prestigious academic event involving Oxford University. About 450 people attended the event at Jing An Shangri-La.

The event involved leading academics from Oxford and China on the theme of urbanization in the 21st century. This experience exposed SUIS Pudong’s students to the world’s best academics from both East and West. This reinforces SUIS Pudong’s commitment not just to a unique holistic international education but also one that thoroughly prepares their students to fulfill their academic ambitions at the world’s finest universities, Morris said. SUIS Pudong has experienced rapid growth in student numbers and now offers a primary and secondary/high school international education.

The commitment to an excellent education is not confined to academics. Earlier in the semester, students from the Secondary School of Pudong campus went on a field trip to the Shanghai Rolex Masters tennis tournament. Students enjoyed the chance to see the results of many years of dedication and commitment by the world’s elite tennis players.

Students saw Roger Federer walk past them on his way to warm up for his match. The students went to a variety of different courts to watch the matches in progress, before heading to Court One for the match between Federer and Gael Monfils.

On leaving the court, the students met Rafael Nadal on his way out to practise. Needless to say this was an enjoyable trip for all. But, the trip was designed to inspire students to achieve their utmost ambitions through hard work and dedication.

SUIS Pudong is a unique international school with students from over 30 nations. It provides a multilingual, multicultural education in which students study three key world languages — English, Chinese and Spanish. In addition, students are mentored by teachers to develop into confident, inspirational leaders.

The diverse range of extra-curricular activities that involve debating, acting, dance and music as well as a variety of sports, empower all students to develop intellectual, social and physical skills underpinned by a moral character education.

Teachers are well qualified and experienced, having been educated at top universities. According to Morris, the strong sense of unity within the school community stems from the “East meets West” philosophy practiced by all at SUIS Pudong. There is a genuine appreciation of the host culture at the school.

Moreover, students of all backgrounds are able to integrate with each other, which strengthens their adaptability and flexibility, both essential skills in an ever-changing world.

“Tolerance and understanding are key hallmarks in a typical SUIS Pudong student. Not only do these qualities make impressive ambassadors for our school but they empower our students to be model global citizens of the 21st century,” Morris said. “Our students’ ability to reach out to others, be they newcomers, visitors or parents, is the greatest promotion any school could wish for.

“I find myself very fortunate to be the principal of such a tight-knit school community where everybody supports each other and all dedicate themselves to ensuring our students experience the very best education,” Morris said. “Very soon, we will be in a position in which we will not be able to take on any more students in some grades because of increased demand experienced this year.”

Morris came to SUIS Pudong having spent six years in senior leadership guiding schools to achieving exceptional exam results as well as sending their students to the best universities.
