SUIS’ access program helps students transition to international school system
WELCOME to Lorne Barnes’ classroom. Sakeskins hang on the wall; there is a story about Bigfoot on the board; pictures of the Loch Ness Monster can be seen on a computer screen; and the students are smiling. Is this for real?
Barnes runs Shanghai United International School Hongqiao’s Access Education Program. Access is a program unique to Hongqiao, designed for middle school learners who, as yet, do not have the English language proficiency to enter a fully international program. Access not only fosters English language competency, according to Barnes, it also helps students develop the “creativity, work rate, and discipline needed to be successful in an international school system.”
Barnes and Hongqiao’s Western Co-Principal, Martin Donnellan, developed the unique program for aspiring middle school pupils, most of whom spend a year in the program, but some transition sooner into Hongqiao’s international stream.
As Barnes explains, the program creates a contagious atmosphere of success. One student who successfully moved into the international stream last term has become a role model for others who seek out her wisdom and aspire to follow in her footsteps.
Walking the walls of Barnes’ classroom one sees assignment titles such as “How to Set and Achieve Goals in School” and “Creative Writing: The ‘Tail’ of Two Snakes.” It’s evident that this is a learning place, if not a hive of creative eccentricity. Just ask Barnes’ students, who describe the program as “English and grammar heavy” and “helping them learn how to win.”
Questions may linger about Bigfoot’s existence and that of the Loch Ness Monster, but the Access Program is alive and well at SUIS Hongqiao, thanks to Mr Barnes!
