SUIS sets ambitious standards

2011 has marked the ascendancy of Shanghai United International School's Gubei campus as one of the leading academic international schools in Shanghai and China with ever increasing numbers of students enrolling.

This June, SUIS Gubei achieved excellent examination results in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education run by Cambridge International Examinations, a branch of the world famous Cambridge University.

In 2009, one SUIS Gubei student gained the highest score in China for Science IGCSE. In 2010, SUIS Gubei achieved the third highest results in China, with 36 percent of students scoring A*-A. In 2011, SUIS Gubei greatly exceeded this performance with one student gaining 100 percent in her First Language English IGCSE.

This year, SUIS Gubei successfully maintained the high result of 36 percent of students scoring an A*-A, and increased A*-C from 29 percent to 80 percent, the highest level ever at SUIS. It is the best IGCSE results in the history of Xiehe Group. This achievement is all the more remarkable, given that the majority of the year's highly diverse international students were using English as an additional language. It is worth mentioning that one student had only started her IGCSEs six months before exams having joined SUIS Gubei from the US.

These results show that the school community has grown strongly, united in enhancing the education of students with all educational stakeholders co-operating with one another effectively. SUIS Gubei now looks forward to maintaining the academic excellence in future IGCSE and IB exams as well as sending the Grade 12 students to the very best universities in the world. Even more detailed tracking of students' progress than ever before will be adopted in the form of fortnightly (once every two weeks) reporting on attitude to work and attainment. This is in addition to the four main reports on student performance every academic year. This semester also marks the restructuring of the pastoral system with extra-time now dedicated specifically to daily mentoring of students, PSHE (personal, social, health and economic), house meetings and whole-school assemblies every week to help boost the moral education of the students and to strengthen their house allegiances. Meanwhile, SUIS looks upon students' development in the diverse extra-curricular activities at the end of the school day as an important aspect of holistic education.

Recently, SUIS Gubei was honoured to welcome the Executive Director of The British Chamber of Commerce Shanghai, Phil Roebuck, to the school. He was the guest of honor at the school's annual Duke of Edinburgh Awards ceremony. The Duke of Edinburgh program was established initially for young people between the ages of 14 and 24 in 1956 to help youths find purpose in life by engaging in a program of activities covering voluntary work, physical improvement, skills development, traveling abroad and living independently. SUIS has a total of 33 students aged 13 to 19 years, who have completed one of the awards in the program within the last year. The school will continue to offer this highly rewarding program throughout the 2011-12 school year and beyond with approximately 45 students.

After congratulating the students on their achievements, Roebuck had the opportunity to view some of the students' work. "What's remarkable," he said, "is that some of these kids set out to acquire a new skill, be it photography or painting, but in doing so ended up discovering a real talent."

In addition to self-improvement, Roebuck noted, "Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh also shows future employers that you have got the ability to set targets and achieve goals, that you are committed and motivated, and that you are active in and outside of the classroom. These things are important to employers."

Roebuck was clearly impressed that SUIS Gubei offers the very best international education to all students of all nationalities.

So, the students are back at SUIS Gubei as ambitious as ever to achieve highly in academia by aspiring to study at the world's best universities or to develop many talents by taking advantage of the school's 40 clubs and societies that meet every week.
