Sharing thoughts on technology and gadgets
In today’s fast-paced, technology-driven world, almost every passing month brings the release of a new high-tech gadget. To help students make sense of the new technology landscape, and to better understand the direction technological devices are headed, the Head of Information Communication Technology at Yew Chung International School of Shanghai’s Gubei campus, David Crosby, recently worked with Year 13 students to create an online forum. It is used to host discussions about the usefulness of technological gadgets, and to hypothesize about future advancements in technology. In staying with the theme, students held the conversation online, which allowed the ideas to be posted and reviewed in real time. Crosby shares some of the topics students discussed:
Q: What is your favorite gadget, and why?
My students Wesley, Michael, and Tarang all focused on computers, and they had specific opinions about the value of using laptop or desktop products, and Apple or PC platforms. Another student, Hector, is very musically inclined, so his interest was in gadgets that support musical performance, including “the two guitar pedals (he) owns,” which he can connect to his guitar in order to adjust the sound effects of his instrument. Students also noted the advantages of technology in conducting research, producing high-quality schoolwork, or using technological products to help develop their interests outside of school.
Q: Which gadgets do you use most frequently?
This question elicited a common response: students are using technology, including computers, tablets, and smartphones to conduct research, complete homework, stay in contact with teachers and classmates, and to access Power School, the software program YCIS Shanghai uses to provide instant access to assignments and grades for students and their parents.
Q: What do you imagine the future of gadgets will look like?
Estevan sees the future of gadgets as following the current trajectory, in that technology will continue to become “much smaller, and more powerful.” Wesley agreed, suggesting that gadgets will become “smarter, thinner, and easier to use.” Michael described a future where technology and connectivity merge, featuring, “Nano suits, integrated directly for human use,” and Hector added his opinion, saying, “Technology is unpredictable.”
With technology continuously changing and becoming ever more optimized and beneficial, students at YCIS Shanghai are provided with the information needed to stay on top of all the new advancements. After all, the school’s motto is: “To align with science and technology.”
